AJINOMOTO® Clean Up Our Earth Together Day 2015 in Collaboration with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)

Consecutively 7 years in a row, Ajinomoto (Malaysia) Berhad once again conducted “Clean Up Our Earth Together Day” campaign to keep the community cleanliness at watch. As a collaborative event in conjunction with Universiti Putra Malaysia’s (UPM) “Cheerful Health Programme Together with Penderas Residents 2015”, the campaign was held on 31st October 2015 took place at Kampung Penderas indigenous village in Kuala Krau, Pahang. This is the first attempt for the “Clean Up Our Earth Together Day” campaign to step outside Klang Valley region.

With the aim to promote sustainable development and to improve the capacity of the people to address environmental issues that associates with development, diligent GO GREEN activity is carried out alongside the extensive CLEAN UP activity. The 2 activities were completed successfully with active involvement of 39 Ajinomoto Malaysia staff, 41 UPM students and 50 indigenous children from Sekolah Kebangsaan Penderas.

The GO GREEN idea revolves around the initiative to cultivate pocket farms for green vegetables in Sekolah Kebangsaan Penderas as a source of nutrients for hostel students’ daily consumption. This will see as a sustainable gardening that encourages healthy and sufficient vegetable intake as well as to ensure food security. For the CLEAN UP initiative, cleaning activities such as rubbish picking and rubbish segregation at Kampung Penderas were carried out to raise community awareness of waste recycling and maintaining a clean environment.

Within two and a half hours, more than 60 plants from 3 types of vegetables were planted successfully and 118.7 kg of waste has been collected through this collaborative effort.  Mr. Keiji Kaneko, Managing Director of Ajinomoto (Malaysia) Berhad closed the activity by distributing daily groceries to the participated indigenous children. Ajinomoto (Malaysia) Berhad also took this opportunity to introduce and share the knowledge of the 5th basic taste, Umami to everyone in Sekolah Kebangsaan Penderas by sponsoring an information board named “Umami Corner”.

Successfully initiated round the globe, the “Clean Up Our Earth Together Day” activity is part of the “Smile Earth” campaign organised by Ajinomoto headquarter in Japan since 2007 with the goal of providing the Ajinomoto Group employees an opportunity to engage in the effort of helping resolve global issues regarding environment, society, and food. Ajinomoto (Malaysia) Berhad hopes to implement more social programmes and environmental protection in the future in order to provide better service to the community with a concern of a progressive corporate social responsibility.
